With the largest Child Life program in Oklahoma, The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center is dedicated to the healing of the whole child and focused on the physical and psychosocial well-being of our patients.
The Zone is a community-funded 6,000-square-foot play-and-learning haven where patients and siblings can play, explore, learn, socialize and forget their worries. Located on the sixth floor, the Zone is staffed by Child Life specialists trained in meeting the psychosocial needs of children in health care settings. The Zone provides a place for these specialists to work with the children on development activities and provide social and emotional support that the children and their families need.
Under minimal supervision, determines and implements educational, recreational, and therapeutic activities and programs for patients and families, which enhance the psychosocial support to patients and families.

Determines, plans and leads activities that promote the social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth of children and families.
Plans, schedules, implements and directs patient and family programming in The Zone, In the Zone TV Studio, the Children’s Atrium, other common areas and on units.
Manages special event calendar for the year and plans progress for each activity.
Initiates and builds community relationships to enhance and expand patient and family programming.
Evaluates and ensures activities and programs meet patients’ needs, interest and level of participation.
Evaluates and ensures activities are meaningful and well-coordinated for community partners.
Actively seeks best practice programming, innovations and new technology to implement.
Actively seeks and stewards community sponsors and partnerships.
Supervises the activities for groups and individuals, ensuring creative opportunities for access and adaptation so activities reach all patients and families.
Identifies age-appropriate strategies and supports children and families during stressful situations.
Evaluates responses to interventions and makes adjustments as needed.
Works in collaboration with the child life team and volunteer staff daily.
Determines, plans and implements various volunteer roles.
Trains and supervises the work of volunteers and students.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Child Life (or related field), Creative Arts, Education or Marketing preferred.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years’ professional experience working with children and families.
Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: Certified Child Life Specialist preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles, techniques, materials and equipment used to facilitate activities with individuals and groups. Ability to creatively design activities for patients who have a limited range of motion and dexterity and the patience and understanding to guide them through these activities. Effective communication skills both written and verbal. Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team. Skills sufficient for supervising volunteers and students. Good interpersonal skills to develop effective working relationships and deal with difficult family dynamics. Knowledge of performance improvement tools and how to monitor an ongoing process. Skills in planning programs and analyzing the problems that arise. Computer skills and a general knowledge of office procedures.
