The Police Athletic League(PAL) is a crime prevention program that provides a safe and supervised environment for youth, ages 8-18, to participate in a wide range of activities. The program offers youth the opportunity to interact with Kansas City, Missouri police officers and create positive relationships by participating in cultural, character development and sports programs. All programs and activities are designed to instill values of integrity, responsibility, self-motivation and teamwork, with the result of improving the quality of life for at-risk youth and reducing juvenile crime and victimization throughout the entire city.
The Police Athletic League is hiring an additional Certified Child Life Specialist to help co-lead the Wellness and Resilience Program. The position is part-time, weekday, after-school hours between 3-8 pm. The Wellness and Resilience Program is lead by two child life specialists who adhere to the Association of Child Life Professionals Values Statements. Police Athletic League (PAL) child life specialists incorporate mindfulness techniques, yoga, expressive arts, preparation, coping skills, various therapeutic play modalities and self-regulation skills into working with youth in the PAL environment.
Child life specialists working at PAL develop positive, collaborative relationships with police officers and volunteers who work with youth in PAL environment. Child life specialists provide educational opportunities, incorporating developmental background and expertise, and model healthy trauma-informed practices to effectively engage and interact with youth. Child life specialists help provide a safe, predictable and nurturing environment for youth and families attending the Police Athletic League.
PAL child life specialists provide daily interventions to best support and meet the individual needs of youth attending programs. PAL child life specialists facilitate monthly youth advisory board meetings at PAL and help board members develop and implement ideas to empower youth with a sense of agency. These interactions help to enhance the positive relationships within the greater Kansas City community.
Certified Child Life Specialist, preferably with 6000 hours of experience working in hospital environment
